Our Story
In 1998, the Asian financial crisis erupted. That year, my mom lost her job as the economic downturn swept through the region, leaving many families, including ours, in a precarious position. Determined to raise me despite the hardships, she borrowed money to drive a taxi. She worked tirelessly, from dawn until late at night, often skipping meals or sleeping just a few hours to make ends meet, stretching every penny to its limit. Even when she was sick with a fever, she couldn’t afford to stop working. This grueling routine continued for nine years until the constant strain took a toll on her health. Realizing that this way of life wasn’t sustainable, my parents made a bold decision to pool their hard-earned savings and start a small shop in the old town market. My dad began brewing and selling fruit wine, while my mom, ever creative and skillful, started crafting hand-knitted shawls, clothes, and bags to sell alongside the wine.
Life remained challenging, but a spark of unexpected joy came when my mom took in a stray dog and two stray cats. Their companionship lifted her spirits and brought back her smile. Winters in Sichuan were bitterly cold, and my mom knitted sweaters to keep the animals warm. The sight of these cozy, well-dressed pets amazed the market visitors. Customers began asking her to knit clothes for their own pets, and word of her exquisite skills quickly spread. Her creations, with their intricate patterns and beautifully coordinated colors, became highly sought after, and the locals praised her artistry and sense of style. My mom’s dedication to her craft turned her handmade items into more than just products—they were love letters to life, filled with warmth and resilience.
I eventually grew up and moved to New York, but the lessons my mom taught me—her strength, love, and creativity—remain woven into the fabric of my being. Her hand-knitted creations now serve as a symbol of her legacy and a testament to her perseverance. I dream of one day opening a creative studio here in New York, a space filled with vibrant displays of her intricate handknits, inspired by the patterns and colors of our hometown. This studio would not only celebrate her artistry but also serve as a haven for storytelling and connection, where people could learn the beauty of crafting by hand and carry forward the values of resilience, love, and kindness she instilled in me.
